CITY OF MACON AND COUNTY GAZETTEER BIBB COUNTY, / \/t> FOR 1884. by the C M Q" INTERSTATE DIRECTORY CO. No. S2 South Broad Street, Atlanta, Ga., --PUBLISHERS OF DIRECTORIES OF-- Tyler, Tex.; Gainesville, Marietta, Griffin, Barnesrille, Rome, Cartersville, Columbus, Macon, Ga.; Birmingham, Ala.; Greenville, S. C.; Charlotte and Wilmington, N. C.; and others South and West. t Atlanta, Geoegia ; . . . " It- bwfoon, Book clnd Job Printer, 32 s'. Broad Streets, i . ' 1 8 8 4. In presenting our patrons with the City Directory for 1884 we desire to state that special pains have been taken to make a work reliable and thoroughly representative of the City s enterprise, progress, etc. That there are some errors, we do not doubt, as it is absolutely impossible to avoid them in a work of this kind; but it is a source of pride to know that they are few in number and of small import, and do not de tract in the least from the value of the book. As to how the present work compares with former Directories of the City, is left with the public. The present volume contains 5,097 white and 3,703 colored names, making a total of 8,800. The directory for 1873 con tained 4,845 white and colored names, giving an increase since that date of 3,955. To get at the population, our figures are multiplied by 3, which gives the City a population of 26,400. This, we will state, is a low estimate, many other cities using o%, and 4 as their multiple. Atlanta, for instance, uses 4 and New York 2%. This large increase is due to two causes--actual growth of the City, and the thorough system of canvass for names, every effort being made to get every name. In conclusion, we desire to thank our patrons for the encour agement which the ennterprise has received at their hands, and will state that it is our intention to make the City Direc tory of Macon a permanent institution, and will publish it regularly hereafter. Respectfully, C. M. GARDNER. H. H. DICKSON.
