The 1991 Salesian cover is a photograph of
the Chapel mural.

The yellow sun in the center of the banner
represents Christ, the true light of the world.
This sun is deliberately centralized and large.
It's light spreads out to illumine the earth and
to bring it life. The colors of the mountains and
earth reflected are soft, and soothing. There is
a calm, peaceful feeling as one ponders them.

This light has come out of darkness. The
dark surrounding colors help one experience
the sense that Christ brought us out of dark-
ness into His light. There are degrees of dark-
ness represented by the various dark colors.
The stars represent us as we work our way into
full participation with the true light.

Sister Mary Rosina, R.S.M.

The mural was painted by Sister Mary Jac-
que Benner, R.S.M. and was photographed by
Mrs. Judy Van Doorn. The artwork to the right
was drawn by Nigel Pierce and is representa-
tive of this years theme, A Stronger Flame is
Burning.

The Spark That Lit the Flame .

What really started it all was the opening of our long awaited
New Building. What was once the football teams practice field had
become one of the most beautiful buildings in downtown Macon. In
its center was the chapel where friends and faculty celebrated
mass on a sweltering August day. Despite the heat, students and
their families joined the faculty for the dedication ceremonies, that
afternoon.

A flame was lit that day, not only in the chapel but in the
student body as well. There is a new spirit at Mt de Sales this year,
and like the candle that will burn eternally, we can only hope that
these new-found bonds of unity and school spirit are never extin-
guished.

To bless the new building, Bishop Lessard sprinkles holy water in
chapel.

Student Body President, Shayne Myhand ad-
dresses family and friends at the dedication cere-
mony, as Sister Rosina and Father Cuddy look on.

Where our athletic teams once practiced, now
stands a beautiful new addition to Orange Street.

_.. 18 Shining in our Eyes.

We knew there was something different, but we couldnt put our
finger on it. As the '90-91 Salesian Staff met for the first few
times much thought was put into this years theme. Finally, Nigel
Pierce put everyone's feelings into words: A Stronger Flame is
Burning ...

Throughout the year we have noticed more people at sporting
events, larger numbers in clubs, and more class unity. As the year
progressed and we focused on graduation and beyond, it was nice to
look around and see Mount de Sales at what may have been its
best.

This year has brought many experiences. Seniors wrote term
papers, Juniors enjoyed the cheerful Claxton Experience, Sopho-
mores got their licenses, Freshman became high schoolers, and
Middle Schoolers enjoyed having Saint Josephs Hall all to them-
selves.

We have just one question ... Where do we go from here?

Fright Night, Taking quite a deviation from the

normal, more placid homecoming
themes, the student council, perhaps
influenced by the annual events close
proximity to Halloween, chose Fright
Night as the theme. Within a matter of
days the campus was transformed into
a graveyard with tombstones, bats, and
spiderwebs everywhere. Vampires,
ghosts, goblins, witches and even the
devil himself roamed the dark corridors
of MDS halls across the campus. Mean-
while, normal, law-abiding students
lived in constant fear that the feline
ghost of the cat Shayne Myhand plowed
into would return to wreak havoc on an
unsuspecting and guiltless student
body. As always, homecoming week was
exhausting and exhilirating, but this
year, some students might have suf-
fered a few sleepless nights afterwards
wondering if there really are strange
things out there that go bump in the

Best Friends

Friendship

Did you ever know that you're my
hero, you're everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle, cause you
are the wind beneath my wings.

We laughed until we had to cry. We
loved right down to our last goodbye. We
were the best I think we'll ever be, just
you and me for just a moment.

Through the years, you've never let me
down. You've turned my life around. The
sweetest days Ive found, I've found with
you.

And a friend will not say never, cause
the welcome will not end, and a lifetime's

Student Council

Students often find that their
opinions are lost in the demands of
the administration. At Mount de
Sales, however, members of the stu-
dent body are given a chance to
voice their opinions on school issues
that will affect them.

Students are encouraged to go to
their student council officers when-
ever they have suggestions. Instead
of functioning in an environment
where decisions are made solely by
adults, students at Mount de Sales
actually have a say-so in many of

Fun Night and flying sparks.

Fun Night 1991 lived up to its
name once again. The classes really
showed their spirit in the form of
yelling, screaming and taunting oth-
er classes (especially the Seniors
and the Freshmen). The class of
1992 triumphed for the third year in
a row and took the Fun Night title,
but the real competition was be-
tween the Seniors and the Fresh-
men. The tug-of-war, which the sen-
ior guys won for the fourth year,
finally propelled the Senior class
into an impresive third place, leav-
ing the Freshmen in fourth until
next year.

Fun, Sun & Games

What did everybody do this year for
Easter Vacation? Well, for those people
who stayed in Macon, GA and surrounding
vicinities, the top spots were their back-
yard sandboxes and Lake Tobesofkee. For
those, however, who ventured to the out-
side, here are some usual places and
some unusual places to spend your vaca-
tion: Marla Beck, Alison McPherson, and
Rita Smith went to Hilton Head, S.C., while
Alicia Bell stayed nearer town and hit Six
Flags Over Georgia with her boyfriend.
Ben and Susan Wills, Meg Jackson and
Rick Sizemore flew across the Carribean
Sea to Jamaica with a mission group. Soph-
omore Trey Gavin enjoyed a week in Pana-
ma City while Mark Beiker relaxed at Al
Faulks aunts pond fishing. Freshman Su-
sannah Hughes sat at home and wished
that she was with Melanie Koch at Dayto-
na with MTV and Gerardo.

While everyone did something different,
the answers were all the same it was
definitely a BREAK and, according to all of
the tan faces, it was a wonderful success.

Behind the Scenes

Ah, yes .. . the Prom! That very special
evening of dancing and romancing was tra-
ditionally prepared by the junior class.
Enchantment Under the Sea was a most
appropriate theme for this years prom,
which was garnished with shimmery
shells, mermaids, bubbles, a treasure chest
with jewels, and oodles of paper-stuffed
fish!

Through the hours of cutting, pasting,
tracing date walls, stuffing fish, and con-
structing shells, the cheerful, laugh of jol-
ly Mrs. Claxton could be heard, and the
friendly smile of Mrs. Robbins was always
helpful. There was the constant dry humor
of none other than Mr. McLachlan. Per-
haps even more entertaining, however,
was the battle of wits between Mr.
McLachlan and Mrs. Garvin, which ended
in a tie.

After finishing, the prom scene was
wonderful. On prom night, nobody noticed
the streamer deformities, and the ceiling
did not leak; thus, the nights phenomenal
success was ensured.

Passing the torch

Seniors ... At last! Grinning broadly,
the members of the class of 1992 assumed
their roles as seniors on May 23, 1991.
Following the awards ceremony for under-
classmen, the traditional Moving-Up Day
mass was held. Juniors participated in the
mass, which they had planned, by reading
selected scripture passages and the pray-
ers of the faithful and presenting the gifts
at the altar. After communion, each Junior
received a blessing from Father Cuddy,
and, thus, achieved that long-awaited posi-
tion at the head of the school. Junior
chorus members sang the class song From
a Distance, a reminder of the peace, love,
and world harmony for which we strive.
Finally, Sister Rosina granted the new sen-
iors their first privelege after the mass,
and they were allowed to enjoy the re-
mainder of the day away from school.
Thus, once again, the countdown begins

Oh, its just the little homely things,

The never-can-be-equaled things,
That all the papers cite.
Are not human things,
The everyday encountered things,
The just-because-I-like-you" things,
That make us happy quite.
So heres to all one little things,
The done-and-then-forgotten things
That make life worth one fight.

The Passage of Time

Time has passed and people too;

Away time goes like the morning dew.

The road leads us to many distant places;
Along the way will be many new faces.
With sorrow and with joy we travel away,
Unaware of what awaits beyond today.
But we will go and start over again,
Building new bonds and making new
friends.

There has been pain and there has been
sorrow,

But time heals wounds and makes a better
tomorrow.

Remembering the past will bring happiness
to our minds

And when we hear a church bells chimes
We will be aware of the passage of time.

Here is where we realize

This sculpting of the Fathers great design.
Through time you've been a friend to me
But time is now the enemy

But I know the road he chose for me
Is not the road he chose for you

So as we chase the dreams we're after ...
Pray for me
And I'll pray for you

That one day love will bring us back around
Again ...

With these lyrics from Michael W. Smith, we

A Stronger Appreciation .

For Mount de Sales Academy, a special
pride and appreciation is attributed to its
chorus. For several years the chorus has com-
municated to the student body and faculty
what we can honestly call an atmosphere of
recognition not just spiritual recognition,
but recognition of those around us.

From Christmas music to literary competi-
tion, the MDS chorus adds that extra some-
thing to an academic year filled with all kinds
of frontiers, goals, and expectations. The divi-
sions of the MDS chorus advanced ensem-
ble, mixed ensemble, girls ensemble and the
new addition of handbells work separately
and collectively to keep the dimension of our
school a strong, meaningful one.

If ever there was a dedicated, energetic,
and talented director, MDS can proudly claim
Mrs. Donna Washburn as one. Mrs. Washburn
came to our school with hopes of bringing out
the musical talents of many in a crowd of
more than five hundred students; her hopes
have become a reality year after year. The
spirit of Mrs. Washburn is evident in the
chorus'programs and welcomed by our faculty

Alice Fry dazzles us with her musical abilities
while Mrs. Washburn leads our chorus.

and students.

With the chorus, MDS shares the sounds of
diversity during Black History month, the
mellowness of spring during the annual
spring program, and the jingles and excite-
ment of Christmas during the anxiously
awaited Christmas concert. In all of this lies a
special sense of our MDS family.

In its years of existence, the MDS chorus
has been about dedication, creativity, fun,
and expression. Having been in the chorus for
four years, I hold with me a stronger appreci-
ation for music, and I give a strong recom-
mendation to the many talented students who
are yet to become a part of this creative
ensemble.

Away from the crowd, everyone is desperately seeking Susan Wills.

Lights, camera, action ... the first ever
Videovations team, formulated in the year
1990, brought to the student body a new and
exciting outlook on the school year. Filled
with expert filmakers, top-notch directors,
and creative thinkers, this team captured
both outstanding highlights and unforgetta-
ble memories and placed them all on film. A
continuous candid, the videovations film it-
self brought simple photographs to life, and
thus allowed viewers to remember their high-
school years beyond a stationary picture.

A pilot program, videovations first year of
filmaking has been one big challenge. As with
the Salesian, deadlines must be made, and
crunchtimes must be overcome. New ideas
and storylines are hard to come by, and the
question of who or what to film is always a
task. However, the video yearbook has

brought to MDS an exciting atmosphere, and
one of innovation and change. Definitely tak-
ing advantage of modern technology, Videova-
tions is proud to present to the student body,

Completely enthralled, this Videovations team listens intensely to the mas-
terful directions of Mrs. Timms,

our first ever video yearbook.

Though the video yearbook is new and ex-
citing, it was not created to serve as a re-
placement for the traditional yearbook. In
fact, year after year, students and faculty
have been challenged with the task of creat-
ing new and exciting volumes of MDS history.
The Salesian is truly a work of art that comes
about only through a joint effort. The mem-
bers of the staff have come to realize that
without each person contributing his or her
part, the finished product will never be com-
plete.

Although it has varied from year to year,
the Salesian offers a chance for new and
better ideas to formulate among the minds of
seniors. However, the production of a year-
book could not be possible without the help of
well organized and patient supervisors and
typists. Under the direction of Mrs. Tate, and
newcomer Ms. Little, the chore of putting
together a bound volume of memories has
become significantly easier.

How did Cheryl Williams rate her own office
in the 2x 3 closet on NBs second floor? Ask Mrs.
Tate.

A SENSE OF

One of the most evident ways that Mount
de Sales is kept abreast of national, local, and
campus news is through through the DeSales
Despatch. Through the years, the Despatch
has provided MDS with news hot off the
presses from topics of national interest to
news of what makes our school what it is.

Editors, page editors, section writers all
of these creative students brilliantly execute
stories and ideas that collectively produce a
finished newspaper that sparks the interest
and curiosity of all of us. The Despatch gives
each MDS student a chance to become intu-
itively connected with the activities and spirit
that makes our school such a mixed bag of
opportunity and personalities.

As its very dedicated, hard-working advi-
sor, Mrs. Mary Frances Peery has been a true
blessing to the Despatch. Under her leader-
ship, the newspaper has grown in capability

Sales DeSpatch.

CREATIVITY

and class as it gains new members each year.
Mrs. Peery has never failed to be the guiding
hand our writers have needed in times of
total frustration and hopelessness. I think
that each member of the Despatch can hon-
estly appreciate Mrs. Peerys suggestions
especially within the panicky days just before
a deadline.

We pride our newspaper staff so much be-
cause it shows each member of MDS how the
accomplishments and personalities of every
one of its students adds to its uniqueness.
Those that seem to go unspoken are adopt-
ed by the Despatch and fully celebrated. For
its future years, MDS can look to the newspa-
per for unification, entertainment, and, for
the teachers, one day on campus when every
classroom is immersed in it reading and
QUIET!

Library Assistants April Cato and Greg Currey.

An activity on behalf of a person, organiza-
tion, or cause, is considered service.
Thoough not all schools pride themselves
with acts of service, MDS is proud to display
many special support groups. The main objec-
tive of a service organization is to spend out-
side time contributing to a cause that is in-
tended to make others happy. Our very own
Religion Council, SAC committee, Spirit Sup-
port Group, and library assistants add much
to the MDS community. In fact, each group
contributes something of its own that is
worth mentioning. Religion Council sponsors
our food drive, Christmas donations, masses,
Tag-a-toy, and spiritual readings that are pre-
sented in our most trying times. The SAC
committee spends hours after school putting
together datewalls for our dances and orga-
nizing our entertainment. The Spirit Support
Group puts forth their effort in the athletic
department. Banners, pep rallies, and rowdi-
ness all contribute to the main objective of
this organization. Last, but not least, our li-
brary assistants service is irreplaceable.
Without the help of those dedicated helpers,
we could neither receive totals of Kroger re-
ceipts, nor enjoy daily newspapers. It should
be mentioned, that these organizations, filled
with hard workers who are faithfully dedicat-
ed to their jobs, are the foundations of true
spirit of MDS. Indeed, service is a special
quality that envelops each and every student
here at Mt. de Sales.

A SENSE OF COMPETITION

Mt. de Sales prides itself on the reputation
of having a strong academic program. This
program enables students to reach the high-
est educational standards, and it also allows
those who excel in knowledge to gather to-
gether in order to compete. The Science Bowl,
Academic Bowl, and Math teams are well
representative branches of this academy.
They consist of those students who wish to
excel in academics, and who also wish to take
on the challenge of competition. The Math
team, headed by Mr. Merman, has competed
in several meets. The GML (Georgia Mathe-
matics League) is taken once a month in
order to place our top math students up
against archrival schools. The Academic

one big trivial pursuit game. At the beginning
of the year, this team took first place in the
skill of general knowledge in a tournament at
Macon College, thus enabling them to com-
pete at State. The Science Bowl, which has
had limited success this year, is headed up by
Mr. Mclachlan. In the fall, this team compet-
ed in a written test and finished third place.
Since then, they have competed in several
meets, but all against tough opponents. All in
all, these teams have succeeded in continuing
the tradition of Mt. de Sales excellence.

Laura Nackashi and Anne Claxton prepare for their next debate meet

The 1990-91 debate team competed in sev-
eral tournaments during the season, which
began in October and lasted until the end of
January. Members of the team were juniors
Jennifer Kim, Alice Fry, and Anne Claxton;
sophomores David Skinner, Laura Nackashi,
Ben Wills, Rick Sizemore, Al Faulk, James
Buckley, and Kevin McTier; and freshman
Melanie Union. Debaters performed admira-
bly, arguing the topic of increased space ex-
ploration. This topic provided for very inter-
esting debate rounds, allowing team members
to debate over such issues as the possibility of
aliens overtaking the earth or the feasibility
of new programs supervised by NASA.

The Varsity team of David and Ben affir-
mative, and Laura and Anne negative, won
first place at the region competition held in
January. Individual recognition was awarded
to David, who received the third place speak-

speaker award. This four-man team advanced
to the state tournament at West Georgia Col-
lege, where they again demonstrated a fine
performance.

The Mount de Sales Model United Nations
delegation, consisting of students from the
Foreign Relations class, represented the na-
tions of Israel and South Africa at a Model
U.N. held at Wesleyan College on March 8.
The Model U.N. was divided into two sessions,
one in the morning and another during the
afternoon. For the morning session, students
formed various committees to argue submit-
ted resolutions regarding such topics as inter-
national law, the environment, and social con-
cerns. A General Assembly was held in the
afternoon. Selected resolutions were dis-
cussed and voted upon during this session.
From the day's activities, MDS students
gained much knowledge about the insight into
international politics.

on his own little cloud, searching for life's

little more sedate and normal. Nevertheless,
they are a very talented bunch. This fall, the
drama troupe took a one-act, And They

the state. Later in the spring, a powerful

Throughout its existence at MDS, literary
competition has been more than successful.
In fact, our literary team is one of the states
finest, setting the pace for other schools to
follow. Organized and headed up by Mrs. Jane
Claxton, this team is comprised of many hard
working and determined members. Those who
competed in the region and state competition
were chosen on Literary Day. Some areas of
competition included: Essay, spelling, oral in-
terp., extemporaneous speaking, singing and
piano. The winners then proceeded to region,
taking home the first place trophy, and then
went to state finishing second. All in all,
literary competition in the GISA has im-
proved measureably. However, the Mt. de
Sales literary team has always been one of
the finest, and will continue to compete in an
outstanding fashion.

Joining our long-standing chapter of the
National Honor Society this year are three
newly chartered honor societies. MDS has
been awarded the first National Art Honor
Society charter in Middle Georgia. This char-
ter simply enhances the pride we all feel in
our new art department which offers courses
in drawing, graphics, painting, printmaking,
clay, and photography; our well-equipped art
classroom; and our art teacher, Mrs. Diane
Mead. This society gives recognition to those
creative students who find expression and
identity through art and also offers them an
opportunity for providing community service.
Mr. Terrence Mermann, Guidance Director,
also assists in advising this group.

Candlelight induction ceremonies held in
the school library during the evening of May
17, established new chapters of the national
French and Spanish Honor Societies at Mt. de
Sales. The purpose of the Societe Honoraire
de Francais and the Sociedad Honoraria Hi-
spanica is to honor outstanding French and
Spanish students and to promote the ad-
vanced study of these languages. Mrs. Skin-

ner and Mrs. Fry are faculty moderators for
the societies.

As the new societies honor excellence in
art and foreign language study, the National
Honor Society induction service in May con-
tinued its annual recognition of those MDS
students who exhibit excellence in character,
scholarship, leadership, and service. National
Honor Society members continue to show
their willingness to serve the school both
faculty and students. Mr. Michael Vullo ad-
vises this group.

And finally, although it is not an honor
society per se, Mt. de Sales organized this
year a new group of competitors. Sponsored
by the Close Up Foundation, an independent
organization established to encourage a bet-
ter understanding of our government, we
fielded our first Citizen Bee team, We brought
home honors, too. After winning third place
in our Citizen Bee region, which is made up of
private and public high schools, Vince LaVec-
chia represented MDS at the state level. Sr.
Helen is the moderator and coach.

The privileged, the proud, the Juniors, Class of 92, have
ascended the scholastic hierarchy over the past three years to
reach the upper ranks. One of the benefits of this ascension
(besides being a Jammin Junior of course) is on-campus privi-
leges. This gave many students a chance to complete homework
assignments, study, or talk with fellow classmates. For Juniors
this was a new and refreshing taste of freedom, respect, and
responsibility.

One of the highlights of this year was preparing
the Jr.-Sr. Creative minds met and pooled ideas.
Enchantment Under The Sea was chosen as this
years theme.

Then the fun began. Members of the Junior class
met during the weekends for several intense hours
of work. Amidst uncertainty over the band and
debates over the proms colors, was fun, much
laughter, and many HRS jokes. The successful unifi-
cation of the class was as important as the success
of the prom itself.

The soccer team entered the 1990

season with high hopes and expecta-
tions. Never before did Mt. de Sales
have so many players with so much
talent. The depth of the team, along
with a strong desire for victory, drove
the Cavaliers to their best season ever.
Going undefeated during the regular
season, the team won yet another re-
gion championship. Six players made
the All-Region team: Marc Hamann, Ni-
gel Pierce, David Spisso, Ben Whitaker,
Walt Yarbrough, and Mychal Epps.
Marc, David, and Ben also made the
All-State team.

Entering the State Championship as
the favorite, the soccer team defeated
long-time rival Frederica for the first
time ever. Coach Dattilo said of the
game, It was a moment of great jubila-
tion! It was a very significant accom-
plishment for the whole team. In the
finals of the championship, the team
lost an agonizing game that was decid-
ed in the end by penalty kicks.

The Cavaliers were coached by Mr.
John Dattilo along with Mr. Gary Mu-
solf and Dr. Robert Wright.

The end of this years football season
marked the end of a legendary era for
Mt. de Sales. Coach Mike Garvin, after
twenty-four years at the helm of the
Cavaliers, stepped down as head coach.

This years season was one marked
by determination, desire, accomplish-
ments, and disappointments. Though by
the 5-6 record, this year did not seem
like a success, the team fought hard to
the end of every game. The season got
started on a good note with an early
victory over crosstown rival First Pres-
byterian. Throughout the year, the Cav-
aliers played tough games against
teams that outweighed them in size but
not motivation. The team fought for a
bid in the playoffs, but were eventually
defeated. This year six players were
named to the All-Region team: Chris
Hatcher, Mike Hull, Jason Cowan, Win-
dell Rutherford, Millard Vining, and
David Spisso. Chris Hatcher was also
named to the All-State team. It was a
difficult and frustrating year because
we didnt achieve our goals. But it was
a great experience playing for MDS and
Coach Garvin in his last year, said
senior, Shayne Myhand.

As an era of Cavalier football comes
to an end, we sadly say goodbye to the
departing seniors and wish Coach Gar-
vin success in all his future endeavors.

I will never forget our times together, the times that we sweated, the times that we

together in our memories.

This season brought several changes
to the Mount de Sales football program.
Instead of having B and C teams,
The coaches merged the seventh,
eighth, and ninth grades into one junior
varsity team.

This years team proved to be a hard
working one. The players showed a lot
of determination towards developing
themselves into strong varsity players.
The team was coached by Tony Pierce,
who was assisted by Paul Midkiff.
When asked what the highlight of the
season was, Coach Pierce responded
quickly, Without a doubt, it was the
victory over Stratford.

The team compiled a 2-3 record,
beating Windsor and Stratford. A lot of
progress was made strenghthening the
varsity program. Mount de Sales can
look forward to having experienced and
determined players in the years to
come.

Our goal this season was to improve
each game, and they did that. This
was the comment Coach Lynn Hatcher
gave when asked about her B-team
softball season. This was a really young
team, the majority being seventh grad-
ers. Their record this season was 3-9,
but this record does not show the poten-
tial the girls have according to Coach
Hatcher. Theres a lot of potential on
that team and in the next few years |
am expecting it to come out. We ended
the season on a good note with a win
against FPD who had beaten us twice
in previous games. Coach Hatcher
could not say enough good things about
this team.

The softball team got off to an excep-
tional start this year as it took second
place in the Windsor preseason tourna-
ment. The hopes for another successful
season skyrocketed as the Lady Cavs
also swept their first two double-head-
ers against FPD and Monroe. The girls
did have a great year, reaching a record
of 7-4, but they were eventually
knocked out of the state tournament by
Pinewood Christian.

The team was coached by Mr. Ches-
ter Pierce, and aided by Mr. Joe
McGhee. Coach Pierce spoke about the
team, I feel that the girls did an excel-
lent job of representing the school.
Giving her views of the season, senior,
Jenny Filush said, We started off real-
ly, really well, getting twenty wins ear-
ly on. We played hard, but ended up
with the short end of the stick.

The teams success is shown in its
five All-Region players: Jennifer
Joyner, Leslie Weston, Katherine
Hatcher, Beth Shelby, and Amy Hays-
lip. Beth and Amy also received All-
State honors. Congratulations to the
girls for a fine season!

This years squad had real skill that
was equally distributed, was what
captain, Bridgett Bailey, said. The
squad consisted of ten hard-working,
dedicated, and spirited young ladies.
We worked together, had a lot of fun,
and everyone contributed, were among
the comments made by seniors, Amy
Henderson and Bridgett Bailey. This
squad was picked in the spring of 1990
and has continously worked through
this spring of 1991. The girls attended
summer camp where they received
many awards. They then held a camp
of their own for the B-team cheerlead-
ers.

Following the camps came the begin-
ning of school, and with it football and
soccer season. Pep rallies, skits, and
caravans were among their duties. Af-
ter football and soccer season, it was on
to basketball. Amy Henderson sums up
how much the girls gave of themselves.
In the past I thought the squads were
good and really close, but this year was
the closest since I have been on the
squads. This years squad were the
heart amd soul of the spirit that was
evident at all of our games this year.

The B-team cheerleading squad this
year was composed. of four sophomores
and six freshmen, of these only three
had previous experience. We had a
very young squad and the year required
much practice and hard work. The girls
all improved 100% by the end of the
year. This was the statement made by
Mrs. Reeves, the coach of the B-team
cheerleaders. Captain, Courtney Carey
added, We worked together and be-
came a real squad. The B-team cheer-
leaders attended a camp held by the
Varsity cheerleaders, cheered for the B-
team sports, and helped the Varsity out
by cheering at the soccer games as well.

This group of seventh and eighth
grade girls came together and devel-
oped into a great squad! said Mrs.
Blanks, the coach of this years C-team
squad. The squad was headed by Kris-
ton Roman and did a great job of cheer-
ing our C-team sports on this year. They
began during basketball season, cheer-
ing for the seventh and eighth grade
teams. The girls were trained by the
varsity and B-team cheerleaders. With
cheerleaders like these, the spirit will
not be lacking at Mount de Sales in the
years to come.

The 1990-91 Lady Cavaliers basket-
ball team had an upbeat season,
marked by improvement and new found
team unity. Freshman, Melanie Koch,
said, I think we came together as a
team and played as one on the court.
The highlights of the season were de-
feating long-time rivals Brentwood and
the region champion Tattnall Square
Academy. I think this years team set
new standards for Mount de Sales girls
basketball. There was a lot of aggres-
siveness and intensity, said senior,
Jenny Filush.

The team was coached by Tony
Pierce, who was assisted by Coach
Lynn Hatcher and Coach Randy Davis.
Dee Dee Redding was selected to the
All-Region team. Jenny Filush, Jennifer
Brack, Katherine Hatcher, and Leslie
Weston received honorable mention. If
this season was any indication, the fu-
ture of Mount de Sales girls basketball
looks really bright.

Hard work, dedication, and love for
the sport made the 1990-91 B-team girls
exceptional. There were tough times
during the season, but with team effort,
team spirit, and that true craving for
victory, the team had an outstanding
season. The girls finished with a record
of 13-2, losing only to Tattnall Square
Academy and Stratford. The girls were
coached by Lynn Hatcher, who was as-
sisted by Coach Tony Pierce.

The girls worked hard all year. They
improved their individual and team
skills. Many great things are expected
to surface next year with this group of
true Cavalier winners.

The 1990-91 girls basketball C-team
was very young and inexperienced.
Throughout the season, however, the
girls worked on individual skills and
learned how to play as a team. They
played some very challenging games.
Defense was the teams strongest area,
and their offense improved throughout
the year. For a young team they did
very well.

This year the team was coached by
Randy Davis. Mount de Sales basketball
can look forward to a good group of
hard-working girls who have the poten-
tial for greatness.

This years basketball season was a
memorable one for players, coaches,
and students. The team played well
throughout the season and showed
signs of excellence in the coming years.

Going into the season with a young
team, Coach Robert Slocum did not
quite know what to expect. The team
began the season slowly, but gained
confidence as they played. In McAuley
Hall newly dubbed The Terror-
dome by the infamous Roberts Row-
dies the Cavs were almost unbeat-
able.

The team played well in a difficult
region. In the region tournament, they
nearly defeated the defending champi-
ons, the Tattnall Trojans, in a game
that went into overtime.

When asked what he felt the team
accomplished this year , Coach Slocum
remarked, Everyone got a lot of expe-
rience this year, and thats something
you just cant teach. The team ended
the season with a record of 14-11. Jason
Cowan, Chris Hatcher, and Sam Jolley
made the All-Region team. Hopefully,
the team will use the experience gained
this year to make next season even
more outstanding.

This years boys basketball B-team
made a lot of progress toward
strenghthening themselves for varsity
play. Each player developed his individ-
ual skills and his team work.

Many of the players felt good about
how the team developed during the sea-
son. Our record doesnt tell the whole
story about the season. We all got a lot
of experience and got ready for next
year, said sophomore, Mark Devenney.

The team was coached by Chester
Pierce. Though they finished the season
with a 3-7 record, everyone enjoyed the
season and became a better basketball
player. This hard-working team has the
potential to bring Mount de Sales bas-
ketball to a new level.

This season was proba-
bly the most successful
season of middle school
basketball ever. The teams
won more games this year
than they had in the previ-
ous three years combined.

When asked what
brought about the dramatic
turnaround, Coach Paul
Midkiff remarked, The
seventh grade team had a
lot of talent, and the eighth
grade team played well to-
gether. The future of MDS
basketball looks bright.

When asked to describe track in two
words or less, this was said by track
team members. Fun, hard work, excit-
ing, pain, nervousness, laughter, sor-
row, and finally, victory. All of these
words can as easily describe each indi-
vidual track meet as well. This is so
because unlike other sports, track is
composed of many different events. So
while the long jump team might lose,
the triple jump may win or vice-versa.

Earlier the word victory was men-
tioned. This season was full of victories
for the boy's and girls track team. The
boys placed fourth in the region, while
the girls placed second. Many members
of both teams made it to the state track
meet.

This year the girls were coached by
Lynn Hatcher; Coach Garvin led the
boys. Strong coaches are always a big
plus to the abilities and morale of
teams. This year we had two strong
coaches who brought some very fine
athletes to the state competiton.

The 1991 tennis season opened up in
an unusual way. Two new coaches were
at the helm of the teams, which consist-
ed of several experienced seniors.
Coach Midkiff, who had been assistant
coach last year, coached the boy's team
as Miss Little worked with the girls.

The girls finished the season with a
4-6 record. Giving her views on the sea-
son, Miss Little said, If anything, we
learned how important it is to work
together not just in practice, but also
in matches. The boys won the region
championship with a 5-3 record. We
made steady improvement all season,
said Coach Midkiff, but we are losing
three seniors. We'll have our work cut-
out for us next year.

The members of the boys team who
qualified for the state tournament were
defeated in the first round, while the
girls who qualified made it to the sec-
ond round. Senior, Heather Rouse, gave
her views of the season, There was a
lot more improvement in the team it-
self. We worked harder and wanted it
more.

Five seniors in all are graduating
leaving some uncertainty about next
year. The younger members of the team
are confident, however, and Coach Mid-
kiff and Miss Little are looking forward
to next years challenge.

High goals and expectations marked
the beginning of the 1991 baseball sea-
son. Giving his views early in the sea-
son, senior, Jason Cowan, said, We've
got the best team in the state.

The season had several highlights,
including a 21-7 rout over Stratford.
Another big game was the home field
victory over Tattnall that put the team
in a tie for first place. Losing a playoff
game to Tattnall, the team finished in
second place in the region. Entering the
State tournament, they defeated Deer-
field-Windsor in the first round. In the
second round the team lost to the even-
tual state champions, Southland.

The team was headed by Coach Ches-
ter Pierce, who was assisted by Coach
Tony Pierce and Mr. Ted Shipp. Todd
Robinson received honorable mention
All-Region honors. Chris Hatcher, Jason
Cowan, Thomas Williams, Lamonte
Askew, Darren Davidson, and Danny
Camp were selected to the All-Region
team.

The team made steady improvement
throughout the year. Many of the youn-
ger players showed promise for the fu-
ture. Congratulations to the team for a
tremendous season,

This year's B-team had an outstand-
ing season, marked by improvement
from both the team and individuals.

The team compiled an 8-2 record, los-
ing only to Tattnall. The great thing
about this season, remarked Coach
Tony Pierce, is that everyone contrib-
uted. All of the players got a lot of
experience and prepartion for the var-
sity team. They all showed a lot of
promise as future varsity stars.

The Golf team began this season
with a few simple, realistic goals. The
team wanted to improve their scores
and be able to contend with other
teams. Senior, Billy Daniel, spoke about
the season, The whole team improved.
We felt like we could contend with oth-
er schools. We usually only lost by a
few strokes. The team qualified for
the state tournament by placing fourth
in the region. Though they compiled a
2-6 record, they placed a respective
ninth in the state tournament. We
shot lower scores this year, said Coach
Randy Davis. Though we improved,
our players need to work on the mental
aspect of the game. This years team
was young, having only one senior.
With some hard work in the off season,
this team is capable of great things.

SENSATIONAL SENIOR MESSAGES

The Senior class of 1991

This year we have endured great sadness in the loss of a
great friend and have rejoiced in the recovery of others
I feel that these events have brought about a more
unified class. This past year has brought both good and
bad memories. These memories are those that we should
never forget

Tommy Pidgeon

Study halls been great. I'm glad you got to experience
your first wreck with me, You are the only person who
would listen to me when | needed a friend to talk to. I
know the underclassmen in our study hall thought we
were major pigs, especially when we ate that huge bag of
cheese popcorn. Keep partying and have fun at college
Come and visit me sometimes. We have also had some
great conversations in photography, mainly picking on
Todd. Thanks for all you've done for me and being a true
friend. We Made It !!!

Farhvegnugan (Chip)

I'm just J/K about the name, you're not a farhvegnugan
( most of the time!). Hamlet was a great movie, wasn't
it? NOAH! I dont think I would have survived Math IV if
it hadn't been for you. | apologize for all the times I had
an attitude although you weren't exactly the most
pleasant person yourself all the time either. Thanks for

When I'm gone, never, ever forget our great memories!
St. Patrick's Day, Panama City, dumb jokes, Jimmy Buf-

(Isn't that a fat name?) Its hard to say where it all

began. I suppose. Over Christmas holidays when we hung

around with Evary (& of course drank lots of coffee) or

perhaps with that painkiller conversation (what the . .
am | sayiing.) The past two years have been the best

Words cannot describe what you mean to me. As I look

you and true love lasts forever.

I just wanted to tell you to make the best of your school
years at MDS because high school is fun, and you may
never experience anything like it. You, however, have to
balance playtime and study time; you better make good
grades and listen to mom and dad. Also, take good care
of Leigh while she is at school there. Remember that as
you get older, you have more responsibilities.

Your brother, Bert

Alison

Don't ever forget those great times we had! Be careful
with your neck and I have some montie you can borrow
if you need it. S and BH dude! Hilton Head tags(the
