The plats recorded here are the county’s copy of the plat.</dc:description><dc:description>Land in Franklin County was distributed under the Headright system, where each qualifying male citizen was entitled to 200 acres with the payment of a nominal recording fee. Under the law he was entitled to an additional 50 acres for his wife, each child, and each slave, up to 1000 acres. Revolutionary War Bounty grants of 287 ½ acres were also distributed to Revolutionary War veterans, refugees, and citizens who had not harassed their neighbors. The county land court met the first Monday of each month to receive oral applications for land. If approved, applicants were issued a warrant of survey. Grantees were responsible surveying for their own land. Plats were also recorded in the Surveyor General’s Office in the state capitol. The Surveyor General’s copy is the record copy of the plat. Land plats and their accompanying grants are the original title documents to land under Georgia law. The plats are recorded in rough chronological order by date of warrant of survey, which reflects the date of the land court hearing.
