Master Sergeant Freddie Lee Smith was distinguished for living a life of service to his family, friends, neighbors, city and country. On December 23, 1946, it was a joy for Roosevelt Smith, Sr. and Amanda Cobb Smith to welcome the birth of Freddie, tne fourth of twelve children. One sister and two brothers preceded him in death. At an early c^e, he joined the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Claxton, GA. May 1, 1968, he dedicated his heart and was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cynthia Brewton. Unexpectedly, two days after they were married, he was deployed to serve in the Vietnam War. While yet newlyweds, their love and commitment stayed strong in spite of the distance and months of separation. To this union, they were blessed with the birth of their one son, Frederick Myron Smith. The Smiths were a very caring and loving couple, whose home reflects their commitment to God, family ana community. Freddie received his formal education in the public schools of Evans County in Claxton, Georgia, graduating from Evans County High School, Home of the Longhorns. He attended Savannah Vocational Trade School, where he obtained a degree in Auto Mechanics. Serving three years in the United States Army, he continued his military career and served and retired as Master Sergeant for the Air National Guard, where he served 35 years. He joined the Savannah Police Depart- ment and received several awards and accommodations. He was an active and supportive member of the Peace Officers Association (POA) and Evans County High School Alumni Association. In 2002, with the war on terrorism rising. Master Sgt. Smith was again called to serve his country. He served as supervisor with the 165^ Security Police Squadron in Kuwait. Freddie was a quiet man who had a sense of humor, many friends, and was loved and respected by all who knew him. In lieu of his many odd jobs and talents, he was very skillful in home renovations, fixing and painting cars, and especially passionate about his lawnmower repair shop out in the backyard. July 3, 2014, will always be remembered as the day the Lord caned Freddie home from his earthly duties. He leaves to cherish his memories a beloved and devoted wife of 46 years, Cynthia B. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
