Senate Chamber Feb [February] 18th 1859 
My Dear Julia,
Nothing new since yesterday. I went to the ball last night & received the congratulations of our friends upon our new relations as grandparents -- Many of Sallie's friends send very kind remembrances to her, I staid [stayed] but half an hour as I was quite busy at home, I dined a dozen of our friends [deleted text: before] at dinner & went with them for a few moments to pay my respects to Lady Napier -- None of the Cabinate [Cabinet] was there except Mr Thompson & Mr. Black & I suppose

Mr Craig might be arrested with them. Miss Lowe was absent & it was understood that the President gave the matter the "cold shoulder" but it was a very splendid affair from what little I saw of it. We are doing no better in politics I fear a good deal worse, the joining of factions prevents anything from being done the President threatens to call an extra session in June -- Give love & kisses Sallie & the baby for me. My best regards to Dudley -- Goodbye,
