Know all men by these present that I Mason Barkley of Macon County NoC [North Carolina], a Cherokee Indian, hereby nominate constitute and appoint William H Thomas of Haywood County NoC [North Carolina]  my true and lawful attorney in fact to prosecute my claims for decased [deceased]  Cherokees of whom I am the legal representative, under the act of  
July 29, 1848, One by the name Wallace [unclear text: Barkley ]  who was residing in the Cherokee nation in  
1836, at the time of the ratification of the treaty of  
1835, who was a brother of mine and a half blood Cherokee.  [unclear text: He ]  was [illegible text]  at Calhoun in Tennessee in  
1838, I authorise [authorize]  said Thomas, to draw the interest that has accrued on the claim of said Indian supposed to be 38.98, prior to the date of the passage of the act and three dollars a year since, I further authorize said Thomas in my name to [illegible text]  for the same, to the proper officers of the United States government In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal.
