G. Hyatt, T. K. Welch, J. B. Sherrill and A. D.(?) Rutter, the chiefs of the North Carolina Cherokees, dated March 31, 1871. Thomas reports that he has been informed by Senator John Pool that a delegation of North Carolina Cherokees in favor of emigrating have approached Congress with an application for removal appropriations that has been rejected. Thomas goes on to say that the Eastern Cherokees are faltering without his guidance and are succumbing to the traps of those, like William Johnson, who are accusing him of misdeeds against the Indians, and Thomas swears that he has held fast to the pact he made with Chief Yonaguska and can prove the falsity of the claims against him. Thomas further states that a memorial signed by all the Cherokees wishing to remain East would be presented to Congress as well as a list of those who wished to move West.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Libraries in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>wt191</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:publisher>Manuscript held by the Special Collections Library, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, MS2058 William Holland Thomas , box 1, folder 2, document wt191.</dc:publisher><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Claims</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Relocation</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1871 Mar. 31, Stekoa Fields, [North Carolina] to the chiefs of [the] N[orth] C[arolina] Cherokees / W[illiam] H.
