In the first letter, McGillivray complains that a talk sent to the chiefs in the lower towns should not have been sent directly to them. He tells Clark that the chiefs will not be called to meetings by traders or other unauthorized persons. He goes on to say that he opposes white settlement of the lands near the Oconee River, because he thinks that the settlers will eventually claim land down to the Ocmulgee River as well. McGillivray mentions Governor Samuel Elbert (Governor of Georgia, 1785-1786) and warns that he must put a stop to trade houses in Creek territory or they will be attacked. In the second letter, McGillivray reports that he is setting off for Pensacola and then (New) Orleans for an important meeting called by Bernardo de Galvez, Governor of Spanish Louisiana (1777-1783) and Viceroy of New Spain (1785-1786). McGillivray also reminds Clark that he has yet to make good on his promise to visit Tuckabatchee (also Tuckabatchie) and smoke the peace pipe.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>tcc902</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Telamon Cuyler, box 80, folder 05, document 02.</dc:source><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Treaties</dc:subject><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Land tenure</dc:subject><dc:subject>Indian land transfers</dc:subject><dc:title>Letter[s], 1785 Apr. 24, Tuckebatches, [Creek Nation] to W[illia]m Clark / A[lexander] McGillivray</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
