Gilmer (1829-1831, 1837-1839), responds to a letter from Captain John Shackelford in which Shackelford tenders his services in the Cherokee country. Lewis indicates that the governor has already fulfilled the request of the President of the United States to muster eleven volunteer companies for "the Cherokee service," and therefore, Shackelford's company is not needed. It is likely that the military operation referred to is the forced removal of the Cherokee Indians.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>tcc817</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Telamon Cuyler, box 64, folder 16, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Georgia.
