Sweat at Fort Floyd, Georgia, near Okefenokee Swamp, writes to Georgia Governor Charles J. McDonald (1839-1843) on January 22, 1841 to request that the governor order an extension of the local company's term of service which will shortly expire. The captain feels that a guard should be kept in the vicinity to protect inhabitants against unnamed Indians. He cites recent reports of Captain (Aaron ?) Jernigan, indicating that there are still Indians in the area. Jernigan said that his party of men tracked and killed two Indian men and fatally wounded a third.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>tcc620</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Telamon Cuyler, box 52, folder 03, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Indians of North America--Claims against</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia.
