Charlton to Governor William Schley (Governor of Georgia, 1835-1837) addressing the governor's request for a legal opinion of a recent act of the Georgia General Assembly requiring the governor to pay for personal property lost by soldiers while fighting Indians. Charlton advises Governor Schley to interpret the act liberally and to reimburse soldiers for almost any personal property lost between the time of their enrollment in service to their discharge.
