Stevens mentions Schley's delay in correspondence on this matter and assumes it to be due to state relations with local Indian populations. He attributes it to either Schley's duties relative to the "Creek War" or to "agitation" among the Cherokees that would hamper the railroad project since operations would occur in the vicinity of the Cherokee Nation.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>tcc601</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Telamon Cuyler, box 50, folder 14, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Land tenure</dc:subject><dc:subject>Railroad --Design and construction</dc:subject><dc:subject>Creek War, 1836</dc:subject><dc:title>Letter, 1837 Feb. 21, Newport, Rhode Island to Governor William Schley, Milledgeville, Georgia / James Stevens</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
