Jesup, at the Army of the South headquarters in Tampa Bay, Florida, to William Schley, Governor of Georgia (1835-1837), dated October 19, 1836. Jesup informs Schley that before he left Creek Indian territory, Major Charles H. Nelson proposed raising a regiment of volunteers to fight the Indians in Florida. Jesup indicates his initial hesitation but expresses a newfound interest in the corps since the situation in Florida (probably the Second Seminole War, 1835-1842) has continued through the summer. Jesup requests that Schley issue orders for the organization of this regiment and march them to Tallahasee (Leon County, Florida).
