Hartley Crawford and Alfred Balch, U.S. Commissioners appointed to examine the claims of a memorial submitted by certain citizens of Georgia and Alabama, write to Georgia Governor William Schley (1835-1837) on September 17, 1836 to ask for his assistance in collecting information pertinent to the petition. The citizens claim that fraud was committed in the purchase of Creek Indian reservations, causing the present hostilities between the Creeks and settlers. The commissioners are investigating this matter so that those persons engaged in the aforementioned illegal activities can be prosecuted.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>tcc593</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Telamon Cuyler, box 50, folder 12, document 02.</dc:source><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Land tenure</dc:subject><dc:subject>Fraud</dc:subject><dc:title>Letter, 1836 Sept. 17, Green's near Tuskegee, Ala[bama to] William Schley, Governor of Georgia, Milledgeville, [Georgia] / T.
