Echols & Joseph Day Esqrs [Esquires] Page: [2] 27th May 1836 Dr [Dear] Sir I was in Jefferson yesterday where we had a partial meeting of the citizens of the County in anticipation of the orders which have been received since the meeting was called, owing to the heavy rain and the circumstance of only one Battallion [Battalion] having notice of the meeting comparatively few of the rank & file turned out, the whole regiment is ordered out tomorrow when I have no doubt our quota will volunteer & organize We will also organize a Volunteer company to be in readiness to march against our Cherokee neighbors should they become troublesome which is seriously apprehended -- I travelled from Fort Gaines to Columbus where I arrived on the evening of the 13th Inst. [Instant] and witnessed the alarm and confusion resulting from the Creek disturbances, and the wretched condition of many families flying from Allabama across my road excited my deepest commiseration -- I hope and indeed am inclined to the opinion that this is not a regular war and that the disturbances will soon be quelled yet I do not venture to express the opinion indeed it would be impudent to do so very Respectfully [Signed] James Liddell His Exclly [Excellency] Wm [William] Schley Page: [3] Letter James Liddell 27 May 1836 mis [miscellaneous] Page: [4] Jefferson Geo [Georgia] 30 May His Exclly [Excellency] William Schley Milledgeville Ga
