[Colonel] R. J. Meigs, the Agent of this Nation, who expired on Yesterday morning at 8 O'Clock, after an illness of Eight days. What effect this unfortunate occurrence is to have upon our mission, is yet to be determined. It is to be apprehended however, that it will at least furnish a pretext to the Chiefs for tardy movements, tho' [though] should such a pretext be offered or [deleted text: at ] attempted by them, every exertion shall be used on our part to counteract it as far as possible. It is a source of much regret to us, that none of the head men of the Nation have yet assembled, But we have reasons to believe from information received since our Address reached them, that they have held a Council, and Selected several of their principal men to meet us in a few days, in the event of their Page: [2] doing so, We still anticipate the pleasure, of effecting the objects contemplated by our respective missions. The most prompt and decisive measures will be resorted to, should they not meet us in the course of this week We have the honor to be with sentiments of respect and Esteem your Friends & Obedt.
