Blair and Glascock inform Clark of the recent death of Return J. Meigs, U.S. agent to the Cherokees. The commissioners indicate that his death may furnish the Cherokee leaders, already reluctant to attend treaty meetings, with a further pretext to avoid negotiations. They refer to an address they sent the Chiefs regarding the delay (see tcc054).</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>tcc474</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Telamon Cuyler, box 48, folder 08, document 02.</dc:source><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Treaties</dc:subject><dc:subject>Indian agents</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Meigs, Return J., 1740-1823</dc:subject><dc:title>Letter, 1823 Jan. 29, Cherokee Agency [to] John Clark, [Governor of Georgia], Milledg[e]ville, Georgia / James Blair [and] Thomas Glascock</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
