Lumpkin reports on his endeavor to run the boundary line between the State of Georgia and the Creek Nation according to an unnamed treaty, probably the controversial Treaty of Indian Springs, signed January 1821. Lumpkin mentions an apparent dissatisfaction among the Creeks regarding the outcome of the treaty and the location of the line to be drawn, specifically noting William McIntosh's reluctance to meet with him despite his proximity to McIntosh's home. Lumpkin includes commentary on the value of the soil and climate of the acquired territory and discusses at length the potential commercial and agricultural benefit to be derived from possession of the ceded land. In addition, he expresses prophetic opinions on the way the Indians should be treated, quoting James Monroe, and arguing that the land the Indians occupy is far more valuable to Georgia than it is to the Creeks.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>tcc470</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Telamon Cuyler, box 48, folder 05, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Treaties</dc:subject><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Land tenure</dc:subject><dc:subject>Indian land transfers</dc:subject><dc:subject>Boundaries</dc:subject><dc:subject>McIntosh, William, approximately 1775-1825</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1821 Apr. 28, Yellow River [to] John Clark, Gov[erno]r of Georgia, Milledgeville / Wilson Lumpkin</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
