Page: [1] Hancock 28th July 1808 Sir, On Saturday 2nd. this inst. [instant], Edward Denton of this county was murder'd [murdered] by Kendall Lewis, who has absconded with an intention to escape the punishment which the law has annexd [annexed] to his crime -- This atrocious act was perpetrated amidst a number of Spectators. We the undersign'd [undersigned] taking into consideration the baneful effects which must result to Society, if Such atrocities escape with impunity, are excited to request your excellency to issue a proclamation offering a sufficient reward to induce some person to apprehend the culprit, & bring him to justice -- It is presum'd [presumed], from circumstances, that he is either gone to the creek nation, or the Mississippi territory We are with respect yr. Whittington [Signed] Anderson Comer [Signed] W McDowell Senr. [Senior] A Description of Kendall Lewis is as follows: a small man allowd [allowed] to be five Feet Six or Seven inches high. Slender made, with Black hair black eye brows and not very Dark Skin. he is of a sly countenance & Down cast Look Talks slow and very Gross. but the mark of his hand is the most notable two of the fingers of his right hand has been cut off a small Bit of each it is not Recollected which two fingers but are pursuaded [persuaded] it is the two first of his right hand &c. [et cetera] NB [Nota Bene] It is requested that Col. Hawkins should have a Report as Soon as it is Convenient Sd. [Said] Lewis has Lived in the Creek nation for three years past.
