Wirt outlines the history of negotiations between the U.S. and the Cherokee Nation to establish the fact that the Cherokee Nation is a sovereign state with its own laws and that it is not within the jurisdiction of the State of Georgia. Wirt goes on to say that Georgia's actions are unconstitutional and in violation of solemn treaties made by the United States.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2002, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>pam018</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, E99.C5 W799, box N/A, folder N/A, document N/A.</dc:source><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Treaties</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia--Politics and government--1775-1865</dc:subject><dc:title>Opinion on the right of the state of Georgia to extend her laws over the Cherokee nation / by William Wirt</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
