Calvin Jones, of Raleigh, to the editor of the Register, was published in the Raleigh Register and the American Monthly Magazine. This version, from the American Monthly Magazine, was sent to the editor by Frederick Christian Shaeffer of New York on November 13, 1818. Schaeffer writes a letter of introduction discussing the efforts of some to aid the Indians, speaking highly of the Christian missionaries in the Cherokee Nation such as John and Anna Gambold. The article by Jones discusses the history, progress and benefits of the mission work within the Cherokee Nation. He discusses various missions, particularly those at Spring Place and Chickamauga, and missionaries like the Gambolds. Jones describes the customs and manners of the Cherokee people in an anecdotal fashion and reports on the schools and pupils. He mentions Charles R. Hicks, a Cherokee headman, and Charles Reece, a respected warrior, both Christian converts. In a letter that follows the article, dated November 19, 1818, Schaeffer mentions that three Cherokee men have just passed through New York on their way to Cornwall Academy in Cornwall, Connecticut, one of whom studied under Mr. Gambold for several years. Names and addresses are supplied for contributions to the mission effort. [Detached from the American Monthly Magazine, Dec. 1818, p. 117-124.
