Mitchell (1809-1813, 1815-1817) on October 13, 1812 in regard to the state of affairs between the U.S. and the Spanish government of East Florida. Monroe informs Mitchell that as a result of recent hostilities committed by American settlers, led by General George Mathews (former Governor of Georgia, 1793-1796) in East Florida, the governor of East Florida has declined to promise protection to those settlers within his jurisdiction. He further reports that the Spanish attacked Colonel Thomas Smith's troops while the possibility of negotiation between Spain and the U.S. was being discussed, and unnamed Indians (ostensibly Creeks and Seminoles) were incited by the Spanish to commit hostilities against the settlers. Monroe believes there is cause to fear that such Indian aggressions will increase. He thanks Mitchell for his service in the East Florida situation and informs him that those duties will be transferred to Major General Thomas Pinckney.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>krc128</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Keith Read, box 19, folder 05, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>United States--Foreign relations--1812-1815</dc:subject><dc:subject>Creek Indians</dc:subject><dc:subject>Seminole Indians</dc:subject><dc:subject>Spain--Colonies--Florida</dc:subject><dc:subject>Florida--History--Spanish colony, 1784-1821</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1812 Oct. 13, Department of State, [Washington, D.C. to] David B.
