United States, Georgia, 32.75042, -83.50018Habersham, John1796-05-30John Habersham, a Georgia treaty commissioner, writes to Georgia Governor Jared Irwin (1796-1798) on May 30, 1796 to request that the governor assist him financially in procuring supplies for a planned negotiation with the Creeks. Habersham estimates that the cost of the supplies will exceed 29,000 dollars, and he only has 16,000 dollars at present. He indicates that the superintendent (ostensibly Benjamin Hawkins, U.S. Agent to the Creeks) has assured the commissioners that the Creek Nation will be in general attendance, and the treaty proceedings will go forward. The Treaty of Colerain was concluded between the United States and Creek leaders on June 29, 1796.
