Crawford, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, writes to Erastus Granger (U.S. Indian Agent to the Six Nations, 1807-1819) on October 4, 1816 in regard to subsistence supplied to "friendly" Indians by the federal government. Crawford explains that Indians given subsistence for field service and those supplied because of the destruction of their villages during the late war have become too dependent on the American government, and it will be impossible to continue supplying them unless Congress approves an increase in the annual appropriation. Crawford requests information about Granger's agency and expenditures.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>krc069</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Keith Read, box 06, folder 02, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Indians of North America--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Indian agents</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1816 Oct. 4, War Department, [Washington, D.C. to] Erastus Granger, Buffalo, New York / W[illia]m H.
