In this petition, Levy asserts his right to the three islands of Ossabaw, Sapelo, and St. Catherine's, which he allegedly purchased from Thomas Bosomworth in 1747 and which Bosomworth later ceded to the Crown without Levy's knowledge or consent. Levy cites a case from 1732 that was similar to his own and was resolved when the royal authorities decided in favor of the petitioners. In that case, the expense of settling and cultivating those lands was considered to be of the utmost importance. Levy mentions his own personal expense in trying to settle and cultivate the three islands in question and asks the Crown to return the land to him or grant him land in the West Indies or an interest in the coal mine on the island of Cape Breton. Levy also claims that the only law prohibiting British subjects from purchasing Indian lands was established October 7, 1763, long after he had reportedly purchased the three islands from the Bosomworths.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>krc046</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Keith Read, box 02, folder 70, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Land tenure</dc:subject><dc:subject>Indian land transfers</dc:subject><dc:subject>Bosomworth, Thomas</dc:subject><dc:subject>Levy, Isaac</dc:subject><dc:title>Petition of Isaac Levy, 1767 Dec. 22, to his majesty [the King of England]</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
