Hawkins in 1848. The account details his genealogy and early life in Warren County, North Carolina, including his family's involvement in the Revolutionary War, the loss of sight in his right eye, his work as a French translator for George Washington, his role as a commercial agent for the Board of War (two enclosed letters appear here), his work as chairman of the Committee on Elections, and a general history of his career in the North Carolina state assembly and the U.S. Congress. Hawkins was then appointed to treat with the Cherokee and Creek Indians and was involved in the Treaty of Galphinton (1785), and the Treaty of Hopewell (1786), before he was selected to superintend the Creek Indians. The biography chronicles his life in the Creek Nation, his attitude and manner of living, his beliefs on the intercourse between whites and Indians and his role in the Creek War.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image of original manuscript, scanned by the University of Georgia Libraries in 2000, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>krc023</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Keith Read, box 12, folder 36, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Hawkins, Benjamin, 1754-1816</dc:subject><dc:title>A biographical sketch and incidents of the life and services of the late Col[onel] Benjamin Hawkins Superintendent of all the Indians South of the Ohio by his nephew John D.
