The Cherokees warn that if whites begin settling the Muscle Shoals (on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama) the Creeks in the region will spill blood; they refer to information from George Handcock that settlers will soon converge on the Muscle Shoals. The Cherokee leaders indicate their willingness to continue peaceful relations with the whites. Blount was also Superintendent of Indian Affairs during this period, though it is unclear in what capacity the Cherokees wrote to him.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image of original manuscript, scanned by the University of Georgia Libraries in 2000, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>krc004</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, Keith Read, box 06, folder 20, document 04.</dc:source><dc:subject>Creek Indians</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians</dc:subject><dc:subject>Indian land transfers</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1791 Jan. 28, Highwassey [i.e. Hiwassee], to Governor [of Tennessee, William] Blount / Headmen of the Cherokees</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
