He mentions that he has been spending time in Washington, D.C. occupied in "Indian investigations" for the government. Payne also reports that he travelled to Arkansas to be among the Cherokees. He discusses Cherokee Chief John Ross, his former devotion to Ross and what he perceives as Ross's ingratitude, and says that he has withdrawn from the chief over the past year. Payne also discusses mutual acquaintances and his desire for employment abroad.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>jpa007</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, John Howard Payne Letter Books, box Volume I - 1842, folder N/A, document N/A.</dc:source><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>United States--Politics and government</dc:subject><dc:subject>Ross, John, 1790-1866</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1842 July 13, Washington City to Miss Whipple, Fall River, Massachusetts / J[ohn] H[oward] P[ayne]</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
