Fontaine to John Fontaine, prominent merchant in Columbus, Georgia. Charles Fontaine reports that there is an abundance of cheap, vacant land in the Chickasaw Nation in Mississippi. (Chickasaw Removal took place in 1837-1838.) He asserts that someone with enough capital could easily profit from land speculation there, and he suggests that John Fontaine might be interested in doing so. The letter mentions some banks in the state and region, including agricultural and commercial banks.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>jft007</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The University of Georgia Libraries, John Fontaine Papers, box 02, folder 1838 September-December, document 01.</dc:source><dc:subject>Chickasaw Indians--Land tenure</dc:subject><dc:subject>Chickasaw Indians--Relocation</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1838 Nov. 21, Pontotoc, Mississippi, [to] John Fontaine, Columbus, Georgia / Cha[rle]s D.
