Governor (1796-1801 : Sevier)</dc:creator><dc:date>1797-03-05</dc:date><dc:description>This is a letter, dated March 5, 1797, written by Tennessee Governor John Sevier (1796-1801, 1803-1809) and addressed to John Watts and other chiefs of the Cherokee Nation. The letter was written in response to a letter from the Cherokee leaders in which they apparently denied any wrongdoing on the part of the Indians. Sevier contends that Cherokees have been killing white settlers and plundering their property, and he argues that it is in the best interest of the Cherokee Nation to halt such acts or war is likely to result. He also denies that his preceding communications were threatening in nature and further states that he hopes for peace between the whites and Indians.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Libraries in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>gs036</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:publisher>Manuscript held by the Special Collections Library, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, Governor Sevier, box 1, folder 3, document tl036.</dc:publisher><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Claims against</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1797 Mar. 5, Knoxville, [Tennessee to] John Watts and other cheifs [sic] of the Cherokee Nation / J[ohn] Sevier</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
