Sevier reports that the troops of Captains Wade and Sparks have arrived but are incomplete. He requests that three companies of infantry and a troop of cavalry be sent as well in order to protect the frontier settlers and intimidate the Indians. Sevier also informs McHenry that several families have had horses stolen and wagons plundered along the Cumberland Road and that he has written to the Cherokee chiefs and their agent about this.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Libraries in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>gs030</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:publisher>Manuscript held by the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, TN, Governor Sevier, box 1, folder 3, document tl030.</dc:publisher><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Claims against</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Military assistance</dc:subject><dc:subject>Horse stealing</dc:subject><dc:title>[Letter] 1797 Jan. 17, Knoxville, [Tennessee to] James McHenry, Sec[retar]y of War / John Sevier of an image</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
