Governor (1796-1801 : Sevier)1797-01-17This is a letter written by Tennessee Governor John Sevier (1796-1801) to the members of Congress from Tennessee, dated January 17, 1797. Sevier reports that there have been complaints from settlers who claim that Cherokees have been robbing wagons on the Cumberland Road. Sevier also states that the agent (ostensibly Silas Dinsmoor) has complained about whites settling as far down as the Tennessee River, and he encloses a letter from himself to Dinsmoor (see gs026 of the Southeastern Native American Documents database). Sevier says that an Indian is said to have been killed and another wounded, but he doubts the report.
