United States, Georgia, 32.75042, -83.50018Irwin, Jared, 1750-18181789-10-12This is a letter dated October 12, 1789 from Colonel Jared Irwin to George Walton, Governor of Georgia (1789), reporting recent conflicts with unnamed Indians in the vicinity of the Oconee River (Georgia). Irwin reports that Indians have allegedly burned settlers' homes and stolen their crops and that many settlers took refuge in a fort, which the Indians later burned as well. Irwin says that they are without ammunition and are therefore relatively defenseless, and he asks the governor to send them some supplies. Irwin was later Governor of Georgia (1796-1798, 1806-1809).
