The Cherokees sought the opinion of the court on the issue of Georgia's right to extend its jurisdiction over the Cherokee Nation, effectively depriving them of their sovereignty. Marshall's decision here indicates that the Cherokees cannot be strictly considered foreign nations, as they had argued, and are instead considered "wards of the state," or "domestic dependents." This decision was delivered in the January term of 1831 and is of extreme significance in the development of Indian Removal issues.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Libraries in 2000, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</dc:description><dc:format>text/html</dc:format><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>ch076</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:publisher>Manuscript held by the The Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, TN, State Library Cherokee Collection, box 3, folder 7, document ch076.</dc:publisher><dc:relation>Mode of access: World Wide Web.</dc:relation><dc:relation>System requirements: AT&amp;T DjVu browser plug-in needed to view images of documents.</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Government relations</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cherokee Indians--Claims</dc:subject><dc:title>Opinion of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1831 Jan. / delivered by Chief Justice [John] Marshall on a motion of the Cherokee Nation for a writ of injunction and subpoena against the State of Georgia</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
