Rear Admiral Richard E. Hawes talking with a friend on Jackson Street. Hawes was born in Thomson and attended the University of Georgia and Mercer University before enlisting in the Navy in 1917. During his career of 36 years, he received the Navy Cross twice and the Bronze Star. He commanded the U.S.S. Pigeon, a minesweeper; the U.S.S. Chanticleer, a new type of submarine rescue ship which he helped design and build; and the U.S.S. Antheadon.
