Hawes being honored by the citizens of Thomson and being presented with a gold watch. The ceremony took place on the athletic field at Thomson High School. Hawes was born in Thomson and attended the University of Georgia and Mercer University before enlisting in the Navy in 1917. During his career of 36 years, he received the Navy Cross twice and the Bronze Star. He commanded the U.S.S. Pigeon, a minesweeper; the U.S.S. Chanticleer, a new type of submarine rescue ship which he helped to design and build; and the U.S.S. Antheadon.
