United States, 39.76, -98.51944ca. 1944. Rear Admiral Richard E. Hawes gives his Llewellyn setter, Della, a command aboard his Navy ship. Hawes was born in Thomson, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia and Mercer University before enlisting in the Navy in 1917. During his career of 36 years, he received the Navy Cross twice and the Bronze Star. He commanded the U.S.S. Pigeon, a minesweeper; the U.S.S. Chanticleer, a new type of submarine rescue ship which he helped to design and build; and the U.S.S. Antheadon.
