Note the windmill at right.2003/06/19: This hotel was first built as a clubhouse, part of the retreat for the "Jekyll Island Club," a social club comprising some of America's wealthiest elites, including the Morgans, Astors, Pulitzers, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts. The members built cottages for their families to stay in during their vacations. They usually visited the area after the post-Christmas season. In 1942, the U.S. government ordered the area evacuated, and in 1947 the state of Georgia bought the land and built a state park. Many of the cottages have been preserved and are now open to the public.
