Plantation house belonging to the Jones family. The plantation was established in the mid-1700s and has remained in the hands of the Jones family over the years. It is located west of Millen. Until Jenkins County was created in 1905, this area was part of Burke County. In 1813 a post office was established on the plantation. It was named Birdsville after Samuel Bird, the postmaster. Birdsville was a stagecoach stop as it was on the Old Lousiville Road, which connected Louisville and Savannah. During the Civil War the plantation was in the path of General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea. There are various stories as to why the plantation was not burned.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-CR/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Plantations--Georgia--Jenkins County</dc:subject><dc:subject>Postal service--Georgia--Jenkins County</dc:subject><dc:subject>Architecture--Georgia--Jenkins County</dc:subject><dc:subject>Domestic life--Georgia--Jenkins County</dc:subject><dc:subject>United States--History--Civil War, 1861-1865</dc:subject><dc:title>[Photograph of plantation house belonging to the Jones family, Jenkins County, Georgia, 1960-1979]</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
