Sachem Mills, acquired by Charles Dexter Owens early in the World War II years. The company began manufacturing blankets. This company dates back to the Winder Cotton Mill, which in 1898 manufactured canvas and duck. It was founded by George W. Scott, who founded various enterprises in the Atlanta area including Scottdale Mills. During World War I and II khaki pants for servicemen were produced. In 1951 the plant was known as the Beacon Manufacturing Company. William K. Mahon acquired complete ownership of the operation in 1962 and the name changed to Winder Rug Mill, Inc. The plant now manufactures area and bathroom rugs.</dc:description><dc:description>2003/02/27: The current production of the mill could not be verified.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-CR/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Textile industry--Georgia--Winder</dc:subject><dc:subject>Architecture--Georgia--Winder</dc:subject><dc:subject>Business--Georgia--Winder</dc:subject><dc:title>[Photograph of Sachem Mills, Winder, Barrow County, Georgia, 1948]</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
