It has been very warm to day [April, Friday 28, 1865] Had company drill this fornoon and one this afternoon I have been making out pay rolls we have orders to march tomorrow morning I rec’d a letter from Mate [April, Saturday 29, 1865] We drew 3 days rations of bread, and meat marched to the depot at ten A.M. went aboard the cars 1:30 P.M. Marched back to camp have orders to muster out immediately Mother Mate and Alida were out here to day [April, Sunday 30, 1865] We mustered this morning for one months pay we also had company Inspection at 10 AM I caught a very heavy cold on inspection It has rained all the afternoon I wrote to Mate [May, Monday 1, 1865] I arose early called the roll and mailed Mate a letter rec’d a pass got another photograph left it to Mc Mils sent a paper to Mate [May, Tuesday 2, 1865] I am excused from duty to day we have orders to make [“out” was erased] muster out rolls as soon as possible I have been making out pay rolls to day we finished them this eve. I wrote to Mother this eve [May, Wednesday 3] On duty this morning made out the morning report went down to capt Quimbus office made out a descriptive roll of deserters since the 10 mst [“mst” underlined and ditto mark below] we are now making out discharges for the company expect to be mustered out Tuesday [May, Thursday 4] Stoppd at the exchange last with Hicks made out another discriptive list of deserters and are now to work on the discharges: Sent my measure to Griswolds for pants and vest [May, Friday 5, 1865] Went to Seneca Falls last night returned this morning made out the remainder of the discharges this morning had orders to turn over all muster out rolls and discharges of the regt [May, Saturday 6] Have orders to leave to morrow morning at seven oclock returned to camp this eve wrote to Mate [May, Sunday 7, 1865] Had review at two formed a line at [illegible] the depot at seven [illegible] left Jefferson at 1 PM arrived at Elmira 9” Stopped at Barracks no 1 ward 18” [May, Monday 8] Left Elmira at 10 A.M. I am detached for picket I am very wet as it has rained all day the boys are very tired we camp on Bolivar Hdghts [July, Thursday 13] Was relieved after the sergt formed to base went aboard the cars at the Ferry for Cumberland City this 3 P.M. very warm this afternoon we expect to be mustered out soon [July, Friday 14, 1865] Arrived at this place 4 A.M. formed a line laid until 3 P.M. when we moved to our camp [illegible] which is a very pleasant situation ¼ of a mile from the city of Cumberland I went about 2 miles over the mountains after poles to pitch my tent with the men are all inspection by [illegible] Col Gillmore recd two letters one from Mate and one from Alida Sergt Hicks is worse this morning we have been trying to get him in the Genl Hospital at the city [July, Tuesday 25] Answered Mates letter [illegible] was recd yesterday Lieut Smith has returned we are building a shade over our company street we have company inspection at 9 A.M. every day [July, 1865] Had company inspection by the major Johnny Hicks arrived this morning I went to the city with him this afternoon he returns home this eve on the 10..10 train there is rumors of another move soon [July, Monday 31] I rained a very little this morn – but not enough to prevent inspection also are having comp drill we have Battan drill this afternoon I was in comd of the company I am again Arose very early had a short inspection I drilled the company this morning sent in a request to be [illegible] which was granted rec’d a letter from Mate [August, Tuesday 8] My request has not been granted the capt wants me to keep my old position which I have promised to do Lieut Smith is going to [illegible] West [illegible] as provost marshall I thought of going with him but will have to stay the company this forenoon had com’d of the company on Battalion drill had a fine parade witnessed by Col Wm Pate and wife [August, Friday 11, 1865] Arose very early the nights are very cold I went down to the canal and had a swim corpl Hastings came to our tent this afternoon we now have three Invalids in our tent [August, Saturday 12] Had inspection this morning but no drill built a double Major – went down to the canal had a swim was put in arrest this eve and pulled the stripes for the last time Expect a detail at Genl Emorys qurst [August, Monday 14] Arose very late this morning had a good breakfast and nothing to do the detail has not come and I have not yet been released [August, Tuesday 15, 1865] Am on police guard to day expect to get our pay in a few days there is an order to move our camp tomorrow [August, Wednesday 16] Broke camp at seven am this morning marched to our new Camp 3 miles west of the City on the old Pic Nic ground [August, Thursday 17, 1865] Our lumber has not all come yet I had an interview with Col Gillmore he requested me not to accept a detail as clerk at Genl hdqrs recd a letter from Mother [August, Friday 18] I slept the next door to mother earth with 4 in the bed we have not got our pay yet but expect to tomorrow I am act 1st Sergt [August, Saturday 19, 1865] Did not get our pay to day are expected [illegible] my tent this afternoon with H. J. Fitzpatrick and George [illegible] we have a [illegible] tent Hicks act as liet of the company I am in command of the company to day [August, Sunday 20] Had a gen’l inspection a 9 a.m. took a walk in the country this afternoon had some peaches tomatoes cucumbers and cabbages for the men we draw plenty of potatoes and onions [August, Monday 21, 1865] Have orders to pack up we are going to Wheeling west Va to relieve the 192nd rec’d our pay at the Provost Marshall & went aboard the train at 2 PM rec’d a letter from Mate [August, Tuesday 22] Ran only 20 miles last night it rained all night arrived in Wheeling Wt Va – at six P.M. quartered in the old theatre with the 192nd [August, Wednesday 23, 1865] The 192nd left here this P-M- on their way home I took up my quarters with Sergt Hicks they are very pleasant [August, Thursday 24] Arose very early rested very well in my new quarters the boys are all running around town they have to go on guard every other day I purchased a [illegible] this afternoon [August, Friday 25, 1865] Am on guard to day as Sergt Hicks is now well and doing duty we have over 100 prisoners of every description but they are very quiet [August, Saturday 26] It was a very pleasant night did not sleep on account of the rats which are very plenty and very troublesome was relieved this morning at 9 A.M.
