Thomas writes a letter of condolence due to the loss of Callie's baby. Thomas mentions that Joseph Henry Lumpkin, her father, misses his wife, Callender Cunningham Grieve Lumpkin, and looks forward to her safe return from Callie's. Thomas also writes about his belief that John Charles Frémont, the first Republican party candidate for president, will win the election. If Frémont wins, Cobb states that the South should immediately disjoin themselves from the Union.</dc:description><dc:description>Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>jhl0034</dc:identifier><dc:relation>http://american-south.org/</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Manuscript held by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Joseph Henry Lumpkin family papers, 1821-1862 (bulk 1852-1857), box 1, folder 34, document jhl0034.</dc:source><dc:subject>Infants--Death</dc:subject><dc:subject>Domestic life</dc:subject><dc:subject>Presidents--United States--Election--1856</dc:subject><dc:subject>Republican Party (U.S. : 1854- )</dc:subject><dc:subject>United States--Politics and government--1853-1857</dc:subject><dc:subject>Frémont, John Charles, 1813-1890</dc:subject><dc:subject>Lumpkin, Callender--Journeys</dc:subject><dc:subject>Lumpkin, Joseph Henry, 1799-1867</dc:subject><dc:subject>King, Callie, 1826-1905</dc:subject><dc:title>Letter: Athens, [Georgia] to Callie [King], 1856 Sept. 16</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
