The roof of the facade is topped by a Gothic Revival style battlement. The ground floor storefront has been changed, but otherwise the exterior remains intact. In 1866 a number of Athens' leading citizens founded the National Bank of Athens to stimulate an economic recovery from the Civil War. Henry Hull, Jr. was elected the first president. For its first ten years, the bank operated in half of the Southern Mutual Insurance Company Building on the northwest corner of Broad and Jackson Streets. When Southern Mutual built a new building in 1876, the National Bank acquired this 1855 structure. Known for many years as "Bank Corner," this site remained the headquarters of the National Bank until 1959 when the bank moved to a new building at Broad and Lumpkin. The National Bank of Athens was eventually acquired by the Trust Company of Georgia. For more information see Reap, James. Athens: A Pictorial History.
