Windows feature limestone lintels. The roof is surmounted by a cupola on a square base with an iron railing. The cupola is topped by the scales of justice. Inside is a freestanding spiral staircase featuring white marble steps and an ornate metal balustrade. Above the spiral staircase is a chandelier hanging from the dome, which is actually the base of the cupola. The University of Georgia Law School was organized by Joseph Henry Lumpkin, William Hope Hull, and Thomas R. R. Cobb in October 1859. When the school was recognized by the State General Assembly in December 1859, the school moved into the Ivy Building, which is now the south wing of the Academic Building. Harold Hirsch Hall was built in 1932, and greatly expanded in 1967, when a large addition was dedicated. With the addition, the law school facilities spanned the length of one side of the quadrangle. The expansion provided more room for the library as well as several classrooms, common areas and many additional offices. In 2002, the Law School underwent renovations to enable classrooms to access the internet and to increase classroom space. Harold Hirsch, the building's namesake, was not allowed to contribute directly to construction of the building, so he donated most of the building's furniture.</dc:description><dc:description>Slide annotated: "Law School, U. of Ga."</dc:description><dc:description>Date of structure: 1932.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Lumpkin, Joseph Henry, 1799-1867</dc:subject><dc:subject>Hull, William Hope, 1820-1877</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cobb, Thomas Read Rootes, 1823-1862</dc:subject><dc:subject>Hirsch, Harold E.</dc:subject><dc:subject>Classical Revival</dc:subject><dc:subject>Beaux-Arts</dc:subject><dc:subject>European</dc:subject><dc:subject>Brick</dc:subject><dc:subject>Limestone</dc:subject><dc:subject>Marble</dc:subject><dc:subject>Wrought iron</dc:subject><dc:subject>Metal</dc:subject><dc:subject>Carbonate rock</dc:subject><dc:subject>Sedimentary rock</dc:subject><dc:subject>Rock</dc:subject><dc:subject>Metamorphic rock</dc:subject><dc:subject>Iron alloy</dc:subject><dc:subject>Schools</dc:subject><dc:subject>Universities</dc:subject><dc:subject>Architecture--Georgia--Athens</dc:subject><dc:subject>Architecture--Georgia--Clarke County</dc:subject><dc:title>Harold Hirsch Hall (University of Georgia)</dc:title><dc:title>University of Georgia School of Law</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
