Shaped like a Greek cross, the house has a central octagonal tower. The porches are one-story. Built in 1848 by architect-builder Elam Alexander for Cadwalader Raines (later Cadwell), the design of the structure is based on plans of W. H. Ranlett published in The Architect (New York, 1847-1849), plates 31-35. The front porch has been changed; originally it broke back following the line of walls making three sides of an internal octagon. There are porches between each arm of the cross. A spiral staircase carries up to the attic. Former owners were Raines, Jones, Cox, and Dr. G. T. Miller. For more information, see Linley, John.
