Completed in 1858, the house features a two-tiered cast iron porch. The house was begun by Thomas N. Hamilton in 1857 and finished by his widow, Sarah Hamilton the following year. Mrs. Hamilton moved the house to Milledge Avenue from the once fashionable Lickskillet section of Athens on Thomas Street near Hancock. After Mrs. Hamilton's death in 1876, the house was rented to Dr. and Mrs. Henry Clay White. After the death of Sarah Hamilton's son, Dr. James Hamilton, the house was sold to the widow of Ferdinand Phinizy in 1890. Mrs. Phinizy remodeled the home in the Victorian style, adding stained glass windows, golden oak paneling, damask wall coverings, gas chandeliers, and marble mantels. Mrs. Robert T. Segrest, the granddaughter of Mrs. Phinizy, sold the house to Phi Mu Sorority, who removed some of the Victorian elements and added wings for additional space. In 1967, the Sigma Nu Fraternity purchased the home and replaced the straight staircase with a curved double set.</dc:description><dc:description>Slide annotated: "Athens, Ga, Hamilton-Bishop-Phinizy, Segret Milledge Ave, 1857."</dc:description><dc:description>Date of structure: 1858.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Phi Mu (Sorority).
