The arches shade balconies on the top floor. Similar arches form the colonade of the Savannah Civic Center, which opened in 1972. The original DeSoto Hotel was built in 1888 and demolished in 1966 to make way for the DeSoto Hilton, which opened in 1967. The Desoto Hilton is, like the original Desoto, a luxury hotel. Recreational amenities include a rooftop swimming pool. The Revolutionary War Barracks and Fortifications at Bull and Liberty Streets is now the DeSoto Hilton Plaza.
