Eugene Ely was a pilot performing at the Central City Park fairgrounds in a Curtiss bi-plane. He was a member of the Curtiss Exhibition Team founded by Glenn Hammond Curtiss. On October 19, 1911, he crashed his plane during an exhibition and was pronounced dead on site. Ely was an important figure in the history of aviation. He was the first pilot to take off from a ship (the USS Birmingham), and the first to land on a ship (the USS Pennsylvania).
