Nisbet) on the rt.; Gist's Brigade on the left; Mercer's Brigade (Col. Wm. Barkuloo) in support. Bate's div. was on the rt. E. of the Cr. It was a surprise attack - not on the Federal rear, but on the front of Mersy's Brigade of Sweeny's div. with artillery, supported by one of Fuller's brigades, all 16th A.C. troops. Cleburne's & Maney's divs. [CSA] struck the Federal left flank on Flat Shoals Rd.
