.,,_te Highway System. The Interstates. and any other
specially deolgnated, controlled-access roads will haw traffic

RIDE TO THE RIGHT On two-way roads. ride with the flow of nfflc and aa nearto the right s kle of 1he roadway as practicable .l.l&IRI, for example, when turning left; or when ~ the same speed as traffic; or when the trawl lane is tao narrow to share safely with a motor vehicle; or when

parlJcularfy In nogottaUng poorly designed or comp/ox /ntetsecflons. Be aware that pedestrians and joggera often use Iha edges of roadways, especially when there are no lklawalka. While vehicles are not required to yield in such
situations, it ls oommon sense and courtesy to do so.
USE LIGHTS AND REFLECTORS AT NIGHT Every bicycle.
when being used at night in Georgia, must be equipped with a white front light and rear red reflector each visible from 300 feel A rear red light may also be used in addition to the rear red rellector.
DO NOT RIDE MDRE THAN TWO-ABREAST When mling with others, do not hog the road. While two bicydists riding
side by side (maximum in most situations ) is allowed by Georgia law, it ls common oourtesy to ride single file if it makes it easier fa cars and trucks to pass.
DO NOT ENDANGER PASSENGERS Never carry an addltlonal passenger(s) unless the bicycle Is specifically designed and/or equipped to do so. Children under age one

MOTORISTS SHOULD CONSIDER
BICYCL ES BELONG ON ROADS Bicyclists may not be the fastest road users, but Georgia law recognizes bicycles as vehicles a nd provides bicyclists with full rights end responsibllil es of using the roads. Please drive courteously.
Bk:ycilsts typically travel on the right side ol the road, but may move to the Jen when tumillQ left; or passing slower and stopped vehicles, or traveling in a lane too narrow to be shared with a motor vehicle. or avoiding things like debris, rough pavement, pedestrians, and potential opening car doors.
Bk:ycles ore a legitimate mode of transportation that are pollution free and put no measurable wear and tear on our roads. Because they are small and since bicyclists often seek lower traffic vOlume and back roads, they cause less congesOOn too.
PASS BICYCLISTS WITH CARE Look ahead when you drive; plan and antldpate passli,g a bicyclist quickly, efficlenUy, and with plenty of room (oon&ider the bicycle as a motor vehicle and move ontiroty into the leftfpasaii,g lane and postpone moving back lo the right until after lhe bk:ydi8t 1$ fully In view of your rear view mirror). If the road ls not dear for passing or When In doubt, be patient and wait un1M it Is safe to pass.
SAVE YOUR HORN AND LIGHTS Honking and flashfn11 your headlights because you see a bicydist on the roadway is not a permitted use al horns and lights. Some blcycllsts are startled by euch ectiona and thla could cause a &erious crash,
USE EXTRA CAUTION Assess each blcycllst's capabll11ies with Iha

TIPS FOR SAFER BICYCLING
USE A BICYCLE HELM ET A well-fitting, properly worn, certified, bicycle helmet could save your brain and your life (three-fourths of the annual, national, 800-900 bicycling-related crash deaths are attributed to head injuries). Research indicates that a bicycle helmet can cut the risk of head injury by 85 percent. It is state law for thOse under age
16 operating a bicycle, or riding as a passenger, to wear a
certified and properly attached helmet.
NEVER RIDE AGAINST TRAFFIC Motorists. other bicyclists. and pedestrians are not looking for anyone bicycling in the wrong direction on the wrong side of the roadway. Riding against the flow of traffic s!gnificantly Increases the opportunity fo r and severity of crashes .
PASS ONLY ON THE L EFT Only pass on the right judiciously. Other road users are not typically looking for anyone passing on the right. Passing on the right increases the likelihood of crashes. Even when a roadway includes a bike lane, w ide curb lane, or paved shoulder, use caution when passing on the right.
BE PREDICTABLE Use hand signals to indicate your
intentions to turn, change lanes, merge, slow, and/or stop,
Your JX>Silion within the roadway and in a lane will also, indirectly, signal your intentions. Avoid sudden unexpected movements. Do not weave in and out of traffic. Pick and hold a steady line.
BE SMART Do not catch a ride by hanging on to a moving vehicle. Keep at least one hand on the blcycle handlebars. In addition to having lights and reflectors when bicycling at night. use light colored and/or retro-reflective clothing and bicycle accessories to help you be seen at night. Ride defensively watch out for others, especially at intersections where most crashes occur. Cross railroad tracks as close to perpendicular as possible {al right angles/near 90 degrees) lo avoid having the flangeway "grab your wheel" and cause you to crash. Keep an eye out for and steer clear of sunken drainage grates and drainage grates with slots aligned in the same direction as tire travel. Watch for animals. Be e>ttra careful around trucks and tractor-trailers as they have long stopping distances; forceful wind turbulence: big blind spots; and wide turning radii that can foot a bicyclist into a position that leaves them vulnerable to being run over by rear tires. Never wear headphones. Pull comp!elely off the road when stopped.
BICYCLES AND GEORGIA LAW
Georgia law fundamentally recognizes bicycles as vehicles and provides bicycle dnvers with the same right s and responsibilities afforded other vehicle drivers. Those subsedions of Georgia law dealing with aspects of transportation and travel unique to bicycies such aa Installing blcycle-lire-frfendly drainage grates. transporting chldren by bicycle. end having bicycle llghts and reflectors ind ude Georgia Code 36-60-5, 401-1 . and 40-6-290 through 40-6-299. SHARED-USE-PATH ETIQUETTE
Shared-use-paths, (g reenw ay paths, and rail-trails operate) s imilar to r oadways . Bike, skate, or walk on the right, with the flow of traffic. Slow down when approaching end passing other trail users. Before passing, announce yourself o r intentions well in advance. A friendly ringing bike bell or Hello! Passing on your left.~are considerate and work well. AJways pass on the left... never pass on the right. Always allow faster trail users to pass on your left.
Oboy a ll traffic s igns and rules. Be predictable and extra cautious at intersections and driveways. Do not pass when there is oncoming traffic or when there is a solid yellow, center line. Travel at safe speeds or under posted speed paying attention lo what is in front and behind you.
Do not block t he trail. Groups should travel single file when other trail users are present. If you must stop for any reason, move off of the trail (out of the main travelway).
Show courtesy by yielding to other trail u sers. Bicydists, skaters, and wa lkers yield to horses. Bicyclists and skaters yield to walkers. Bicydists yield to skaters. Downhill users yield to uphill users Faster users yield to slower users.
Control animals . Give a nimals (especially horses) extra room and time to a djusl to your presence. Keep pets on a leash and under control. Walk pets on the right-hand shoulder. Clean animal waste from trails.
Keep the trails c lean. Do not litter. Recycle your own and others trash.
Other cons iderations. Adhere to trail restrictions and hours .. only use trails when they are open. Use front and rear lights if traveling at night. Respect the rights of property owners adjacent to traits. Watch for and report crime and maintenance problems to the appropriate authority. Plan a head knowing your equipment, your abilities, your nourishment requirements, and the area. Prepare with appropriate and well maintained gear, clothing, and accessories (use a checklist). Be extra careful in inclement weather.
